South Lakeland Derelict Mill Renovation
Marlin Windows featured on Grand Designs as part of the remarkable transformation of a historic derelict mill in South Lakeland. This ambitious renovation required bespoke aluminium windows and doors that would respect the building’s industrial heritage while delivering the performance, thermal efficiency and natural light expected from a modern home.
Working closely with the project team, we supplied and installed a range of aluminium glazing solutions designed to maximise panoramic views of the surrounding landscape while complementing the character of the original structure. The result was a striking blend of heritage architecture and contemporary living, helping to transform a once-abandoned mill into an exceptional family home.
“Prudently sourced windows at a reasonable cost.”
“Nothing gets in the way of these views which are so strong that it’s almost like standing in a gallery… that vast window is panoramic, like a super wide-screen cinema screen… it almost completely fills my field of vision.”
Kevin McCloud, Grand Designs Presenter – Channel 4

The project focused on improving lifestyle, accessibility and usability, with large glazed openings flooding the home with natural light while providing easy access to the garden. The slim aluminium bifold door system was specifically selected to deliver a contemporary appearance alongside exceptional functionality, helping to create a bright, open-plan living environment.
