Croft House, Whirlow, Sheffield
Sheerline S1 Roof Lantern with Ambi Sunshade Blue Low E 1.0 Glass
The Property
Croft House is an impressive six-double-bedroom family residence occupying a substantial private plot in the sought-after Whirlow area of Sheffield. Designed to provide privacy, exclusivity and security, the property combines distinctive architecture with extensive luxury accommodation arranged over three floors.
Finished to a high standard throughout, the property required a roof glazing solution that would complement the quality and character of the home while significantly improving the appearance and performance of the existing glazed extension.
The Requirement
The existing PVCu roof lantern had become tired and dated, with ageing frames and glazing detracting from the otherwise high-quality appearance of the property.
The brief was to replace the old PVCu roof lantern with a contemporary aluminium system, transforming the extension both aesthetically and functionally.
The replacement needed to retain the generous levels of natural daylight provided by the original lantern while offering slimmer sightlines, cleaner detailing and improved thermal performance.

With a large area of overhead glazing, solar control was also an important consideration. The new glass specification needed to help reduce excessive solar heat gain during brighter periods without compromising the light, open character of the room below.
Visually, the new lantern had to reflect the scale and quality of Croft House, providing a crisp, modern replacement that would sit comfortably alongside the property’s traditional architecture.
The Solution
Marlin Aluminium Glazing Systems supplied and installed a Sheerline S1 aluminium roof lantern, creating a striking glazed centrepiece for the extension.
The S1’s slim aluminium structure maximises the glazed area and gives the lantern a clean, contemporary appearance while allowing natural light to flood the interior. Its strong geometric roof design also complements the proportions and architectural detailing of the existing residence.
The lantern was specified with Ambi Sunshade Blue Low E 1.0 glass. The subtle blue appearance gives the roof glazing a distinctive finish, while the solar-control and low-emissivity specification helps manage heat from the sun and improve thermal performance.
The completed installation provides Croft House with a bright, dramatic overhead feature that feels entirely in keeping with the scale of the property—combining architectural impact, natural light, solar control and modern aluminium roof-lantern performance in one carefully considered solution.
