Aluminium vs uPVC vs Timber — Sustainability Comparison

This comparison highlights why aluminium is widely considered one of the most sustainable window materials. With a lifespan of 30–45+ years, low maintenance requirements, high thermal performance, and 100% recyclability, aluminium offers long-term environmental and practical benefits. In contrast, uPVC typically has a shorter lifespan and more limited recycling options, while timber often requires regular treatment and maintenance.

Overall, aluminium provides a durable, energy-efficient, and fully recyclable solution — making it a smart choice for homeowners seeking sustainable, future-proof glazing.

Why aluminium windows and doors are one of the most sustainable choices for UK homes

Aluminium windows and doors are widely regarded as one of the most environmentally responsible window options available. Their long lifespan, full recyclability, and high thermal performance mean fewer replacements, lower energy use, and reduced lifetime carbon impact.

Why this matters:

  • Lower energy bills
  • Reduced carbon footprint
  • Long lifespan
  • Less maintenance
  • Future-proof investment

Aluminium & Sustainability

Aluminium Properties

Aluminium is a light weight and high strength material which allows it to be used in virtually every facet of the construction industry.

It is incredibly malleable allowing it to be shaped into countless designs. Aluminium is very durable and highly resistant to rust or corrosion caused by modern industrial pollutants and it requires very little, long term maintenance.

The life span of aluminium products is measured in decades rather than years.

Aluminium & Sustainability

Abundant Aluminium Reserves

Aluminium is the third most abundant material on earth after oxygen and silicon, making up 8% of the earths’ crust. The current reserves are estimated to last for at least 400 years without factoring in recycled aluminium.

Due to the fact that aluminium is endlessly recyclable the global reserves become effectively, infinite.

Recycling aluminium

The most sustainable building material

Aluminium is arguably the most sustainable building material in the world and is also highly recyclable.

The recycling process creates high quality aluminium which loses none of the physical properties of primary aluminium and also uses just 5% of the energy it takes to create primary aluminium.

This is why aluminium in generally regarded as the world’s most sustainable building material.

”4 years have passed since our entire house was kitted out with new doors and Windows. We chose Marlin after seeing the effort they went through to create a quality product and recieving educated advice what best suited our needs. The choice to go with Marlin pays us back every day. Great advice on what Window type & glass treatment to use, excellent product and build, and good communication. 4 years on, I feel we made the right choice. Recommended”.

Long Life

Aluminium as a building material is exceptionally durable, requiring little long term maintenance. It is resistant to corrosion and common industrial pollutants giving aluminium products a much longer life cycle even in extreme environmental conditions.

The EAA calls aluminium a ‘cradle to cradle’ material because although a product may have an end of life, aluminium as a material can be continually recycled and manufactured into new products.

Minimal Long Term Environmental Impact

The use of sustainable building materials is only one part of the answer to the environmental issues that affect us all. By using aluminium products you are choosing a material whose production has minimal long term impact to the environment, is sustainable in terms of hundreds of years and endlessly recyclable.

Aluminium can rightly be said to be the ultimate building material and the building material of choice for the future.

”The Smart system trumps the steel-type systems on thermal performance and cost.

The grasp of the importance of design and quality of manufacture from the Marlin Team is second to none”.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you require any support, please don’t hesitate to review our FAQs below or drop us a message on our contact form here

Are aluminium windows environmentally friendly?

Yes. Aluminium windows are widely considered one of the most sustainable window options because the material is 100% recyclable, extremely durable, and long-lasting. Unlike many other materials, aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without losing strength or quality, reducing the need for new raw resources.

Are aluminium windows more sustainable than uPVC?

In most cases, yes. While uPVC has a lower initial manufacturing footprint, aluminium typically lasts much longer — often 30–45+ years — meaning fewer replacements over time. Aluminium is also fully recyclable, whereas uPVC recycling is more limited and can degrade in quality after multiple cycles.

How long do aluminium windows last?

6High-quality aluminium windows can last several decades, often 30 to 45 years or more with minimal maintenance. This long lifespan significantly reduces environmental impact compared to materials that require more frequent replacement.

Do aluminium windows improve energy efficiency?

Modern aluminium windows use advanced thermal breaks and high-performance glazing to minimise heat loss. This helps maintain comfortable indoor temperatures, reduce energy consumption, and lower heating bills — particularly important in UK climates.
