Bespoke Heritage Glazing for a Luxury Wedding Venue, Penrith Cumbria

The Property

Set within a beautiful estate near Penrith, Cumbria, River Barn is an impressive heritage building being transformed into an elegant new wedding and events venue.

The character of the property comes from its traditional stonework, exposed timber structure and agricultural heritage. Internally, the high vaulted ceilings and original-style features create a striking space, while the sensitive conversion introduces contemporary elements needed for a modern hospitality venue.

A key part of the project was ensuring that the new glazing complemented the historic architecture rather than competing with it.

The Requirement

The brief called for a bespoke heritage glazing solution that would respect the character of River Barn while helping transform the building into a light, welcoming and practical wedding venue.

The glazing needed to maximise natural daylight and create a strong connection between the interior and the surrounding estate, while retaining the refined, traditional appearance appropriate for a heritage property.

Large glazed openings also needed to sit comfortably alongside the barn’s stone elevations, timber doors and exposed internal structure. This required carefully considered proportions, slim sightlines and detailing that would feel sympathetic to the building while delivering the performance expected from a contemporary glazing system.

The Solution

Marlin Windows developed bespoke heritage glazing specifically for the River Barn project, combining traditional architectural character with modern glazing performance.

Dark, slim-profile frames provide a subtle contrast against the natural stone and timber while reflecting the understated industrial and agricultural character of the original barn. Generous glazed areas introduce significantly more natural light into the venue and provide views across the estate, helping create a bright and inviting environment for weddings and events.

Careful attention was given to the scale, proportions and positioning of each element so that the glazing integrates naturally with both the existing building fabric and the wider renovation.

Installation is now underway, with the completed glazing already helping reveal the vision for River Barn: a characterful heritage building given a new purpose as an elegant contemporary wedding venue.
